花鼓戏经典《状元与乞丐》讲述“命运”与“教养”之争，丁花实之妻胡氏宠子成性，舅公王国贤为文凤算命，认定他为“状元命”，于是胡氏从小对他娇惯纵容，致使文凤狂妄自大、不务正业，为日后堕落埋下伏笔，也是全剧对“信命不修身”讽刺的关键所在。

The Top Scholar and the Beggar, a classic Hunan Flower- drum opera, contrasts fate and upbringing. In this scene, Madam Hu excessively dotes on her son Wenfeng after her uncle declares him destined to become a top scholar in the imperial examination. Her blind indulgence breeds arrogance and idleness, paving the way for Wenfeng's eventual downfall.
